South Amman

South Amman is the link between Amman and the governorates of southern Jordan. South Amman began to witness increased traffic flow after the establishment of Queen Alia International Airport. It later started undergoing real estate development through the establishment of universities, factories, and major entertainment venues. Over the years, as Amman's areas became more crowded with residents, people began to seek quieter and more comfortable areas — thus, South Amman became their preferred choice, especially with the development of main road networks that eased traffic movement to and from South Amman.

Today, we discuss South Amman in detail to be an important reference for you, as we will cover the following:

Most areas of South Amman are known for their strategic location along Airport Road, while other areas occupied key locations that formed a connection point between South and West Amman. Below is key information about South Amman areas and their respective neighborhoods.

Al-Qweismeh, Abu Alanda, Al-Jwaidah, and Al-Ruqaim

Commercially, Al-Muqabalin is favored by many traders and investors who have established large commercial centers, wedding halls, construction materials stores, and other businesses. Al-Bunayyat has become a preferred residential zone for those seeking peace and a more rural-like nature. Its proximity to the airport, bordering Airport Road, and its link between South and West Amman made it even more attractive.

The region was annexed to Greater Amman in 1987 and is geographically bounded as follows:

North: Ras Al-Ain and Badr

West: Wadi Al-Seer and Marj Al-Hamam

South: Khreibet Al-Souq

Khreibet Al-Souq, Jawa, and Al-Yadudah

Archaeological sites and history! That’s the hidden truth about Khreibet Al-Souq and Jawa. These areas are filled with Byzantine, Roman, and Ottoman ruins. Historical references mention that Khreibet Al-Souq and Jawa were once thriving commercial centers, especially known for gold trading, and were heavily populated. However, due to continuous wars, the residents chose to abandon the area and leave it like a ruin behind them! They moved to safer places, leaving the markets deserted. It's believed that the name “Khreibet Al-Souq” (the ruined market) originated from this history.

In 1986, Khreibet Al-Souq, Jawa, and Al-Yadudah were incorporated.

What Are the Most Prestigious Areas in South Amman?

Some areas in South Amman have become favorite residential spots for many people. Despite the long distance between South Amman and the heart of the capital, people now prefer to live in quieter areas with a rural character. Below are the most upscale areas in South Amman:

Al-Bunayyat

Known since the 1980s as a small town under the Naour district, its residents originally came from Jordanian tribes. Over time, with the development of Airport Road and the rise of luxury neighborhoods like Al-Thuhair and Rujm ‘Amish, Al-Bunayyat experienced significant urban prosperity.

It joined the list of upscale areas along Airport Road, distinguished by its peaceful and classy atmosphere resembling the countryside. It is also known for its fertile agricultural land and the abundance of fruit trees.

Today, Al-Bunayyat holds a prominent position, competing with the finest and most beautiful neighborhoods in Amman. It connects Naour District with the Capital Governorate and has become a top choice for real estate developers and those seeking tranquil living.

Marj Al-Hamam

Marj Al-Hamam once housed its residents in scattered homes. But following the 1967 war, many displaced people settled there. A second wave of population influx came in 1990 during the Gulf Crisis, and again after the US invasion of Iraq.

It became a preferred location for Jordanian expatriates in the Gulf to buy apartments or build private homes. Due to these waves, Marj Al-Hamam has prospered in both urban and residential aspects, turning into a fully integrated city with healthcare, education, entertainment, retail, and scenic landmarks.

Al-Thuhair

Al-Thuhair is one of the most modern neighborhoods in the region, featuring a wide range of modern buildings — villas, palaces, and luxury apartments with advanced technology and high-end finishes. It is known for its good infrastructure and mild climate, especially during summer.

It overlooks the Eighth Circle junction and lies near several other prominent areas. The name "Al-Thuhair" comes from the Al-Thuhair basin located within the lands of Wadi Al-Seer west of Amman. Both Al-Thuhair and Al-Kursi are considered among the most prestigious neighborhoods in Wadi Al-Seer.
