Amman, the Glowing Gem: Exploring Amman's Upscale Neighborhood of Um Uthaina

Let's talk about one of Amman's finest and most expensive areas. Despite being a relatively modern neighbourhood, Um Uthaina has shone brightly since the 1990s and continues to do so today. It is said that finding vacant land in Um Uthaina is quite rare. Is this indeed true? Let's discover together.

Um Uthaina Before and During the 1990s and its Naming

Um Uthaina carries a somewhat peculiar name, and no stories have been passed down about the reason for its naming in previous generations. The only widely circulated reason is its association with a plant that resembles an ear, found in its lands. People named the area Um Uthaina after this plant. However, some current residents claim to have never seen this plant, possibly due to the urban density that the area has witnessed, claiming most of the lands.

Like other areas in Amman, Um Uthaina was known for its fertile lands and agricultural cultivation from ancient times. It was also a preferred area for shepherds to settle in. During the 1970s, a portion of Um Uthaina's lands was allocated for real estate investment. In 1984, Um Uthaina saw the construction of its first hotel, the Amra Hotel (now Crown Plaza). Over time, Um Uthaina became a choice for some people to build their villas and homes due to its proximity to Sweifieh and Abdoun. Then came the 1990s, specifically after the Gulf crisis, and Um Uthaina began to develop in real estate. It became a destination for investors to build luxurious buildings with high-end apartments and finishes. These were some of the reasons that made Um Uthaina one of Amman's expensive and upscale areas.

Um Uthaina's Strategic Location

Um Uthaina is an elegant neighborhood in the Zahran district located in southwest Amman. The journey to Um Uthaina is enjoyable, starting from the first roundabout, crossing the hills of Amman, and reaching a strategic location between the fifth and sixth roundabouts. Um Uthaina's importance is enhanced by its borders with two of Amman's major roads, Mecca Street to the north and Zahran Street to the south, in addition to its proximity to Sweifieh, Abdoun, and Rabieh.

It's worth mentioning that Um Uthaina is categorized into two neighborhoods starting from the intersection of the sixth roundabout, with King Faisal bin Abdulaziz Street dividing them:

- Eastern Um Uthaina: This neighborhood is located behind the fifth roundabout, bordering Mecca Street, Zahran Street, and Canada Street. It houses the gold and commercial markets.

- Western Um Uthaina: Situated behind the sixth roundabout, this neighborhood borders Al-Madina Al-Munawara Street, Mecca Street, Zahran Street, and intersects with Al-Haramain Roundabout and Suhaib Tunnel.

Jordan Towers in Um Uthaina

Um Uthaina did not settle for being part of the Fifth Circle, an area classified as one of the most expensive areas for hosting various international hotel chains such as The Ritz-Carlton, Fairmont Hotel, Sheraton Hotel, and The Four Seasons. It went beyond luxury and opulence to embrace one of the most important luxury projects, the Jordan Towers project or as commonly referred to among people, the Sixth Circle Towers. When completed, this project will elevate Um Uthaina's status among other areas in terms of sophistication, luxury, and cost. Thus, Um Uthaina will be surrounded by two of Amman's most significant circles, the Fifth and the Sixth Circles.

The Jordan Towers project in Um Uthaina or the Sixth Circle project is classified as a massive mixed-use building, comprising residential, commercial, and entertainment components. It includes a luxurious hotel, upscale residences, offices, shopping centers, restaurants, and conference halls. The work on the Jordan Towers project in Um Uthaina began in mid-2005, on a land area of up to 27,000 square meters. The Jordan Towers project includes two towering structures: the North Tower rising to 180 meters, which will accommodate the hotel, residential units, and offices, and the South Tower rising to 165 meters, housing commercial and entertainment centers, as well as conference halls.

Um Uthaina gained its reputation as one of the most upscale and luxurious areas in Amman when the gold market was established there. This is not just an ordinary gold market; Um Uthaina stands out for housing the largest and most renowned international gold and jewelry brands. Its allure grew even more when it became the only market in Jordan for diamonds. As a result, Um Uthaina's commercial market became known as one of the most expensive commercial markets in Amman. It later attracted shops of international clothing brands, upscale restaurants, and luxurious commercial complexes housing various offices, different companies, branches of various banks, and banking services catering to the residents of the area.
