Marj Al-Hamam, an area that began to flourish since the 1990s, is characterized by its residential and touristic nature, as well as its moderate climate in summer and cold weather in winter.

Initially, it was just agricultural land owned by the Sharakseh people residing in Naour, along with the Bani Abbad, Manasir, and Ramamneh tribes. Later, it transformed into a vibrant residential area, attracting real estate companies and investors who initiated development projects. They constructed residential buildings, apartments, and specialized housing units such as educational housing, police housing, and officer housing. Meanwhile, landowners opted to build their own villas and houses on spacious plots.

Marj Al-Hamam expanded beyond its residential character, quietly embracing a touristic identity with its abundant parks, gardens, and breathtaking views of Amman, the Dead Sea, Naour, and the Jordan Valley.

The Story of Marj Al-Hamam's Development

In a previous article, we discussed the history of Naour, how the Sharakseh people were forced to migrate there to escape colonial wars, and how it evolved from a town to an important city today. Marj Al-Hamam might have had a somewhat similar history. Following the June 1967 war, it experienced a noticeable influx of inhabitants as displaced people chose to settle there. A similar population influx occurred in 1990 due to the Gulf crisis. This trend continued with expatriate Jordanians residing in Gulf countries, particularly after the US invasion of Iraq. Consequently, Marj Al-Hamam thrived both in terms of urban development and as a residential area, becoming a fully integrated city with healthcare, education, entertainment facilities, various markets, and more. Its touristic and scenic areas also contributed to fulfilling the residents' needs.

The Intriguing Naming Story of Marj Al-Hamam

During the Ayyubid and Mamluk eras, carrier pigeons were used to transport mail between different regions and countries. The Mamluk authorities paid special attention to the postal system, establishing and distributing postal stations along major roads leading to different areas of the state. The road between Damascus and Karak had several postal stations, including the "White Tower" station, which was a significant postal center in Al-Balqa. Over time, the name of the "White Tower" station changed to "Pigeon Tower," and eventually, the area became known as Marj Al-Hamam.
